           Buttherearelawsdirectingevents,andsomeoftheselawsareknowntouswhileweareconsciousofotherswecannotcomprehend.Thediscoveryoftheselawsisonlypossiblewhenwehavequiteabandonedtheattempttofindthecauseinthewillofsomeoneman,justasthediscoveryofthelawsofthemotionoftheplanetswaspossibleonlywhenmenabandonedtheconceptionofthefixityoftheearth.

           Thehistoriansconsiderthat,nexttothebattleofBorodinóandtheoccupationofMoscowbytheenemyanditsdestructionbyfire,themostimportantepisodeofthewarof1812wasthemovementoftheRussianarmyfromtheRyazánatotheKalúgaroadandtotheTarútinocamp—theso-calledflankmarchacrosstheKrásnayaPakhráRiver.Theyascribethegloryofthatachievementofgeniustodifferentmenanddisputeastowhomthehonorisdue.Evenforeignhistorians,includingtheFrench,acknowledgethegeniusoftheRussiancommanderswhentheyspeakofthatflankmarch.Butitishardtounderstandwhymilitarywriters,andfollowingthemothers,considerthisflankmarchtobetheprofoundconceptionofsomeonemanwhosavedRussiaanddestroyedNapoleon.Inthefirstplaceitishardtounderstandwheretheprofundityandgeniusofthismovementlay,fornotmuchmentaleffortwasneededtoseethatthebestpositionforanarmywhenitisnotbeingattackediswheretherearemostprovisions;andevenadullboyofthirteencouldhaveguessedthatthebestpositionforanarmyafteritsretreatfromMoscowin1812wasontheKalúgaroad.
