           Finally,thelatestepisodeinPolandstillfreshinthecaptain’smemory,andwhichhenarratedwithrapidgesturesandglowingface,wasofhowhehadsavedthelifeofaPole(ingeneral,thesavingoflifecontinuallyoccurredinthecaptain’sstories)andthePolehadentrustedtohimhisenchantingwife(parisiennedecœur)whilehimselfenteringtheFrenchservice.Thecaptainwashappy,theenchantingPolishladywishedtoelopewithhim,but,promptedbymagnanimity,thecaptainrestoredthewifetothehusband,sayingashedidso:“Ihavesavedyourlife,andIsaveyourhonor!”Havingrepeatedthesewordsthecaptainwipedhiseyesandgavehimselfashake,asifdrivingawaytheweaknesswhichassailedhimatthistouchingrecollection.

           Listeningtothecaptain’stales,Pierre—asoftenhappenslateintheeveningandundertheinfluenceofwine—followedallthatwastoldhim,understooditall,andatthesametimefollowedatrainofpersonalmemorieswhich,heknewnotwhy,suddenlyaroseinhismind.
