           Thelastwordswerereadoutinthemidstofcompletesilence.Thetallladhunghisheadgloomily.Itwasevidentthatnoonehadunderstoodthelastpart.Inparticular,thewords“Iwillcomebacktodinner,”evidentlydispleasedbothreaderandaudience.Thepeople’smindsweretunedtoahighpitchandthiswastoosimpleandneedlesslycomprehensible—itwaswhatanyoneofthemmighthavesaidandthereforewaswhatanukáseemanatingfromthehighestauthorityshouldnotsay.

           Theyallstooddespondentandsilent.Thetallyouthmovedhislipsandswayedfromsidetoside.

           “Weshouldaskhim...that’shehimself?”...“Yes,askhimindeed!...Whynot?He’llexplain”...voicesintherearofthecrowdweresuddenlyheardsaying,andthegeneralattentionturnedtothepolicesuperintendent’strapwhichdroveintothesquareattendedbytwomounteddragoons.

           Thesuperintendentofpolice,whohadgonethatmorningbyCountRostopchín’sorderstoburnthebargesandhadinconnectionwiththatmatteracquiredalargesumofmoneywhichwasatthatmomentinhispocket,onseeingacrowdbearingdownuponhimtoldhiscoachmantostop.
