           ThosesenttofetchthedeputationhadreturnedwiththenewsthatMoscowwasempty,thateveryonehadleftit.Thefacesofthosewhowerenotconferringtogetherwerepaleandperturbed.TheywerenotalarmedbythefactthatMoscowhadbeenabandonedbyitsinhabitants(graveasthatfactseemed),butbythequestionhowtotelltheEmperor—withoutputtinghimintheterriblepositionofappearingridiculous—thathehadbeenawaitingtheboyarssolonginvain:thatthereweredrunkenmobsleftinMoscowbutnooneelse.Somesaidthatadeputationofsomesortmustbescrapedtogether,othersdisputedthatopinionandmaintainedthattheEmperorshouldfirstbecarefullyandskillfullyprepared,andthentoldthetruth.
