           Pierrewentintothatgloomystudywhichhehadenteredwithsuchtrepidationinhisbenefactor’slifetime.Theroom,dustyanduntouchedsincethedeathofJosephBazdéevwasnowevengloomier.

           Gerásimopenedoneoftheshuttersandlefttheroomontiptoe.
