           “Ihaveheardnothing,”Pierrerepliedunconcernedly.“Butwhathaveyouheard?”

           “Oh,well,youknowpeopleofteninventthings.IonlysaywhatIheard.”

           “Butwhatdidyouhear?”

           “Well,theysay,”continuedtheadjutantwiththesamesmile,“thatthecountess,yourwife,ispreparingtogoabroad.Iexpectit’snonsense....”

           “Possibly,”remarkedPierre,lookingabouthimabsent-mindedly.“Andwhoisthat?”heasked,indicatingashortoldmaninacleanbluepeasantovercoat,withabigsnow-whitebeardandeyebrowsandaruddyface.

           “He?That’satradesman,thatistosay,he’stherestaurantkeeper,Vereshchágin.Perhapsyouhaveheardofthataffairwiththeproclamation.”

           “Oh,sothatisVereshchágin!”saidPierre,lookingatthefirm,calmfaceoftheoldmanandseekinganyindicationofhisbeingatraitor.

           “That’snothehimself,that’sthefatherofthefellowwhowrotetheproclamation,”saidtheadjutant.“TheyoungmanisinprisonandIexpectitwillgohardwithhim.
