           Thediscussionbegan.Bennigsendidnotyetconsiderhisgamelost.AdmittingtheviewofBarclayandothersthatadefensivebattleatFilíwasimpossible,butimbuedwithRussianpatriotismandtheloveofMoscow,heproposedtomovetroopsfromtherighttotheleftflankduringthenightandattacktheFrenchrightflankthefollowingday.Opinionsweredivided,andargumentswereadvancedforandagainstthatproject.Ermólov,Dokhtúrov,andRaévskiagreedwithBennigsen.Whetherfeelingitnecessarytomakeasacrificebeforeabandoningthecapitalorguidedbyother,personalconsiderations,thesegeneralsseemednottounderstandthatthiscouncilcouldnotaltertheinevitablecourseofeventsandthatMoscowwasineffectalreadyabandoned.
