           Thequestionforhimnowwas:“HaveIreallyallowedNapoleontoreachMoscow,andwhendidIdoso?Whenwasitdecided?CanithavebeenyesterdaywhenIorderedPlátovtoretreat,orwasittheeveningbefore,whenIhadanapandtoldBennigsentoissueorders?Orwasitearlierstill?...When,whenwasthisterribleaffairdecided?Moscowmustbeabandoned.Thearmymustretreatandtheordertodosomustbegiven.”Togivethatterribleorderseemedtohimequivalenttoresigningthecommandofthearmy.Andnotonlydidhelovepowertowhichhewasaccustomed(thehonoursawardedtoPrinceProzoróvski,underwhomhehadservedinTurkey,galledhim),buthewasconvincedthathewasdestinedtosaveRussiaandthatthatwaswhy,againsttheEmperor’swishandbythewillofthepeople,hehadbeenchosencommanderinchief.Hewasconvincedthathealonecouldmaintaincommandofthearmyinthesedifficultcircumstances,andthatinalltheworldhealonecouldencountertheinvincibleNapoleonwithoutfear,andhewashorrifiedatthethoughtoftheorderhehadtoissue.Butsomethinghadtobedecided,andtheseconversationsaroundhimwhichwereassumingtoofreeacharactermustbestopped.

           Hecalledthemostimportantgeneralstohim.
