           WhileKutúzovwastalkingtoRaévskianddictatingtheorderoftheday,WolzogenreturnedfromBarclayandsaidthatGeneralBarclaywishedtohavewrittenconfirmationoftheorderthefieldmarshalhadgiven.

           Kutúzov,withoutlookingatWolzogen,gavedirectionsfortheordertobewrittenoutwhichtheformercommanderinchief,toavoidpersonalresponsibility,veryjudiciouslywishedtoreceive.

           Andbymeansofthatmysteriousindefinablebondwhichmaintainsthroughoutanarmyoneandthesametemper,knownas“thespiritofthearmy,”andwhichconstitutesthesinewofwar,Kutúzov’swords,hisorderforabattlenextday,immediatelybecameknownfromoneendofthearmytotheother.

           Itwasfarfrombeingthesamewordsorthesameorderthatreachedthefarthestlinksofthatchain.ThetalespassingfrommouthtomouthatdifferentendsofthearmydidnotevenresemblewhatKutúzovhadsaid,butthesenseofhiswordsspreadeverywherebecausewhathesaidwasnottheoutcomeofcunningcalculations,butofafeelingthatlayinthecommanderinchief’ssoulasinthatofeveryRussian.

           Andonlearningthattomorrowtheyweretoattacktheenemy,andhearingfromthehighestquartersaconfirmationofwhattheywantedtobelieve,theexhausted,waveringmenfeltcomfortedandinspirited.
