           Theyoungofficer,hishandtohisshako,ranuptohissuperior.

           “Ihavethehonortoreport,sir,thatonlyeightroundsareleft.Arewetocontinuefiring?”heasked.

           “Grapeshot!”theseniorshouted,withoutansweringthequestion,lookingoverthewallofthetrench.

           Suddenlysomethinghappened:theyoungofficergaveagaspandbendingdoublesatdownonthegroundlikeabirdshotonthewing.Everythingbecamestrange,confused,andmistyinPierre’seyes.

           Onecannonballafteranotherwhistledbyandstrucktheearthwork,asoldier,oragun.Pierre,whohadnotnoticedthesesoundsbefore,nowheardnothingelse.Ontherightofthebatterysoldiersshouting“Hurrah!”wererunningnotforwardsbutbackwards,itseemedtoPierre.

           Acannonballstrucktheveryendoftheearthworkbywhichhewasstanding,crumblingdowntheearth;ablackballflashedbeforehiseyesandatthesameinstantplumpedintosomething.Somemilitiamenwhowereenteringthebatteryranback.

           “Allwithgrapeshot!”shoutedtheofficer.

           Thesergeantranuptotheofficerandinafrightenedwhisperinformedhim(asabutleratdinnerinformshismasterthatthereisnomoreofsomewineaskedfor)thattherewerenomorecharges.

           “Thescoundrels!Whataretheydoing?”shoutedtheofficer,turningtoPierre.

           Theofficer’sfacewasredandperspiringandhiseyesglitteredunderhisfrowningbrow.

           “Runtothereservesandbringuptheammunitionboxes!”heyelled,angrilyavoidingPierrewithhiseyesandspeakingtohismen.
