           Rostopchín’sbroadsheets,headedbywoodcutsofadrinkshop,apotman,andaMoscowburghercalledKarpúshkaChigírin,“who—havingbeenamilitiamanandhavinghadrathertoomuchatthepub—heardthatNapoleonwishedtocometoMoscow,grewangry,abusedtheFrenchinverybadlanguage,cameoutofthedrinkshop,and,underthesignoftheeagle,begantoaddresstheassembledpeople,”werereadanddiscussed,togetherwiththelatestofVasíliLvóvichPúshkin’sboutsrimés.

           InthecornerroomattheClub,membersgatheredtoreadthesebroadsheets,andsomelikedthewayKarpúshkajeeredattheFrench,saying:“TheywillswellupwithRussiancabbage,burstwithourbuckwheatporridge,andchokethemselveswithcabbagesoup.Theyarealldwarfsandonepeasantwomanwilltossthreeofthemwithahayfork.”Othersdidnotlikethattoneandsaiditwasstupidandvulgar.ItwassaidthatRostopchínhadexpelledallFrenchmenandevenallforeignersfromMoscow,andthattherehadbeensomespiesandagentsofNapoleonamongthem;butthiswastoldchieflytointroduceRostopchín’swittyremarkonthatoccasion.TheforeignersweredeportedtoNízhnibyboat,andRostopchínhadsaidtotheminFrench:“Rentrezenvous-mêmes;entrezdanslabarque,etn’enfaitespasunebarquedeCharon.”*TherewastalkofallthegovernmentofficeshavingbeenalreadyremovedfromMoscow,andtothisShinshín’switticismwasadded—thatforthataloneMoscowoughttobegratefultoNapoleon.
