           Theyrodeatafootpacetothebarn,wherealargecrowdofpeasantswasstanding.

           Someofthemenbaredtheirheads,othersstaredatthenewarrivalswithoutdoffingtheircaps.Twotalloldpeasantswithwrinkledfacesandscantybeardsemergedfromthetavern,smiling,staggering,andsingingsomeincoherentsong,andapproachedtheofficers.

           “Finefellows!”saidRostóvlaughing.“Isthereanyhayhere?”

           “Andhowlikeoneanother,”saidIlyín.

           “Amo-o-stme-r-r-yco-o-m-pa...!”sangoneofthepeasantswithablissfulsmile.

           OneofthemencameoutofthecrowdandwentuptoRostóv.

           “Whodoyoubelongto?”heasked.

           “TheFrench,”repliedIlyínjestingly,“andhereisNapoleonhimself”—andhepointedtoLavrúshka.

           “ThenyouareRussians?”thepeasantaskedagain.

           “Andistherealargeforceofyouhere?”saidanother,ashortman,comingup.

           “Verylarge,”answeredRostóv.“Butwhyhaveyoucollectedhere?”headded.“Isitaholiday?”

           “Theoldmenhavemettotalkoverthebusinessofthecommune,”repliedthepeasant,movingaway.

           Atthatmoment,ontheroadleadingfromthebighouse,twowomenandamaninawhitehatwereseencomingtowardtheofficers.

           “Theoneinpinkismine,sokeepoff!”saidIlyínonseeingDunyásharunningresolutelytowardhim.

           “She’llbeours!”saidLavrúshkatoIlyín,winking.

           “Whatdoyouwant,mypretty?”saidIlyínwithasmile.

           “Theprincessorderedmetoaskyourregimentandyourname.”

           “ThisisCountRostóv,squadroncommander,andIamyourhumbleservant.
