           ToPrincessMaryitwasstrangethatnow,atamomentwhensuchsorrowwasfillinghersoul,therecouldberichpeopleandpoor,andtherichcouldrefrainfromhelpingthepoor.Shehadheardvaguelythattherewassuchathingas“landlord’scorn”whichwassometimesgiventothepeasants.Shealsoknewthatneitherherfathernorherbrotherwouldrefusetohelpthepeasantsinneed,sheonlyfearedtomakesomemistakeinspeakingaboutthedistributionofthegrainshewishedtogive.Shewasgladsuchcarespresentedthemselves,enablingherwithoutscrupletoforgetherowngrief.ShebeganaskingDronaboutthepeasants’needsandwhattherewasinBoguchárovothatbelongedtothelandlord.

           “Butwehavegrainbelongingtomybrother?”shesaid.

           “Thelandlord’sgrainisallsafe,”repliedDronproudly.“Ourprincedidnotorderittobesold.”

           “Giveittothepeasants,letthemhavealltheyneed;Igiveyouleaveinmybrother’sname,”saidshe.

           Dronmadenoanswerbutsigheddeeply.

           “Givethemthatcornifthereisenoughofit.Distributeitall.Igivethisorderinmybrother’sname;andtellthemthatwhatisoursistheirs.Wedonotgrudgethemanything.Tellthemso.”

           Dronlookedintentlyattheprincesswhileshewasspeaking.

           “Dischargeme,littlemother,forGod’ssake!Orderthekeystobetakenfromme,”saidhe.“Ihaveservedtwenty-threeyearsandhavedonenowrong.Dischargeme,forGod’ssake!”
