           Wearingawaistcoatoverhiscottonshirt,Ferapóntovwasstandingbeforehisshopwhichopenedontothestreet.OnseeingAlpátychhewentuptohim.

           “You’rewelcome,YákovAlpátych.Folksareleavingthetown,butyouhavecometoit,”saidhe.

           “Whyaretheyleavingthetown?”askedAlpátych.

           “That’swhatIsay.Folksarefoolish!AlwaysafraidoftheFrench.”

           “Women’sfuss,women’sfuss!”saidAlpátych.

           “JustwhatIthink,YákovAlpátych.WhatIsayis:ordershavebeengivennottoletthemin,sothatmustberight.Andthepeasantsareaskingthreerublesforcarting—itisn’tChristian!”
