           Thecrowddrewuptothelargetable,atwhichsatgray-hairedorbaldseventy-year-oldmagnates,uniformedandbesashed,almostallofwhomPierrehadseenintheirownhomeswiththeirbuffoons,orplayingbostonattheclubs.Withanincessanthumofvoicesthecrowdadvancedtothetable.Pressedbythethrongagainstthehighbacksofthechairs,theoratorsspokeoneafteranotherandsometimestwotogether.Thosestandingbehindnoticedwhataspeakeromittedtosayandhastenedtosupplyit.Othersinthatheatandcrushrackedtheirbrainstofindsomethoughtandhastenedtoutterit.Theoldmagnates,whomPierreknew,satandturnedtolookfirstatoneandthenatanother,andtheirfacesforthemostpartonlyexpressedthefactthattheyfounditveryhot.Pierre,however,feltexcited,andthegeneraldesiretoshowthattheywerereadytogotoalllengths—whichfoundexpressioninthetonesandlooksmorethaninthesubstanceofthespeeches—infectedhimtoo.Hedidnotrenouncehisopinions,butfelthimselfinsomewaytoblameandwishedtojustifyhimself.

           “Ionlysaidthatitwouldbemoretothepurposetomakesacrificeswhenweknowwhatisneeded!”saidhe,tryingtobeheardabovetheothervoices.

           Oneoftheoldmennearesttohimlookedround,buthisattentionwasimmediatelydivertedbyanexclamationattheothersideofthetable.

           “Yes,Moscowwillbesurrendered!Shewillbeourexpiation!”shoutedoneman.

           “Heistheenemyofmankind!”criedanother.“Allowmetospeak....”“Gentlemen,youarecrushingme!...”
