           Shestoodbyhermother’ssideandexchangednodswithacquaintancesnearher.Fromhabitshescrutinizedtheladies’dresses,condemnedthebearingofaladystandingclosebywhowasnotcrossingherselfproperlybutinacrampedmanner,andagainshethoughtwithvexationthatshewasherselfbeingjudgedandwasjudgingothers,andsuddenly,atthesoundoftheservice,shefelthorrifiedatherownvileness,horrifiedthattheformerpurityofhersoulwasagainlosttoher.

           Acomely,fresh-lookingoldmanwasconductingtheservicewiththatmildsolemnitywhichhassoelevatingandsoothinganeffectonthesoulsoftheworshipers.Thegatesofthesanctuaryscreenwereclosed,thecurtainwasslowlydrawn,andfrombehinditasoftmysteriousvoicepronouncedsomewords.Tears,thecauseofwhichsheherselfdidnotunderstand,madeNatásha’sbreastheave,andajoyousbutoppressivefeelingagitatedher.

           “TeachmewhatIshoulddo,howtolivemylife,howImaygrowgoodforever,forever!”shepleaded.

           Thedeaconcameoutontotheraisedspacebeforethealtarscreenand,holdinghisthumbextended,drewhislonghairfromunderhisdalmaticand,makingthesignofthecrossonhisbreast,beganinaloudandsolemnvoicetorecitethewordsoftheprayer....

           “InpeaceletusprayuntotheLord.”

           “Asonecommunity,withoutdistinctionofclass,withoutenmity,unitedbybrotherlylove—letuspray!”thoughtNatásha.

           “Forthepeacethatisfromabove,andforthesalvationofoursouls.”

           “Fortheworldofangelsandallthespiritswhodwellaboveus,”prayedNatásha.
