           Withoutgreetingtheofficers,hescratchedhimselfandaskedtobeallowedtopassastheywereblockingtheway.AssoonashehadlefttheroomalltheofficersburstintoloudlaughterandMaryHendríkhovnablushedtillhereyesfilledwithtearsandtherebybecamestillmoreattractivetothem.Returningfromtheyard,thedoctortoldhiswife(whohadceasedtosmilesohappily,andlookedathiminalarm,awaitinghersentence)thattherainhadceasedandtheymustgotosleepintheircoveredcart,oreverythinginitwouldbestolen.

           “ButI’llsendanorderly....Twoofthem!”saidRostóv.“Whatanidea,doctor!”

           “I’llstandguardonitmyself!”saidIlyín.

           “No,gentlemen,youhavehadyoursleep,butIhavenotsleptfortwonights,”repliedthedoctor,andhesatdownmoroselybesidehiswife,waitingforthegametoend.

           Seeinghisgloomyfaceashefrownedathiswife,theofficersgrewstillmerrier,andsomeofthemcouldnotrefrainfromlaughter,forwhichtheyhurriedlysoughtplausiblepretexts.Whenhehadgone,takinghiswifewithhim,andhadsettleddownwithherintheircoveredcart,theofficerslaydowninthetavern,coveringthemselveswiththeirwetcloaks,buttheydidnotsleepforalongtime;nowtheyexchangedremarks,recallingthedoctor’suneasinessandhiswife’sdelight,nowtheyranoutintotheporchandreportedwhatwastakingplaceinthecoveredtrap.SeveraltimesRostóv,coveringhishead,triedtogotosleep,butsomeremarkwouldarousehimandconversationwouldberesumed,totheaccompanimentofunreasoning,merry,childlikelaughter.
