           InthesevoluminousnotesTollsuggestedanotherscheme,totallydifferentfromArmfeldt’sorPfuel’splanofcampaign.InanswertoToll,Pauluccisuggestedanadvanceandanattack,which,heurged,couldaloneextricateusfromthepresentuncertaintyandfromthetrap(ashecalledtheDrissacamp)inwhichweweresituated.

           DuringallthesediscussionsPfuelandhisinterpreter,Wolzogen(his“bridge”incourtrelations),weresilent.Pfuelonlysnortedcontemptuouslyandturnedaway,toshowthathewouldneverdemeanhimselfbyreplyingtosuchnonsenseashewasnowhearing.SowhenPrinceVolkónski,whowasinthechair,calledonhimtogivehisopinion,hemerelysaid:

           “Whyaskme?GeneralArmfeldthasproposedasplendidpositionwithanexposedrear,orwhynotthisItaliangentleman’sattack—veryfine,oraretreat,alsogood!Whyaskme?”saidhe.“Why,youyourselvesknoweverythingbetterthanIdo.”

           ButwhenVolkónskisaid,withafrown,thatitwasintheEmperor’snamethatheaskedhisopinion,Pfuelroseand,suddenlygrowinganimated,begantospeak:

           “Everythinghasbeenspoiled,everythingmuddled,everybodythoughttheyknewbetterthanIdid,andnowyoucometome!Howmendmatters?Thereisnothingtomend!Theprincipleslaiddownbymemustbestrictlyadheredto,”saidhe,drummingonthetablewithhisbonyfingers.
