           Besidesthese,therewereinattendanceontheEmperorwithoutanydefiniteappointments:Arakchéev,theex-MinisterofWar;CountBennigsen,theseniorgeneralinrank;theGrandDukeTsarévichConstantinePávlovich;CountRumyántsev,theChancellor;Stein,aformerPrussianminister;Armfeldt,aSwedishgeneral;Pfuel,thechiefauthoroftheplanofcampaign;Paulucci,anadjutantgeneralandSardinianémigré;Wolzogen—andmanyothers.Thoughthesemenhadnomilitaryappointmentinthearmy,theirpositiongavetheminfluence,andoftenacorpscommander,oreventhecommanderinchief,didnotknowinwhatcapacityhewasquestionedbyBennigsen,theGrandDuke,Arakchéev,orPrinceVolkónski,orwasgiventhisorthatadviceanddidnotknowwhetheracertainorderreceivedintheformofadviceemanatedfromthemanwhogaveitorfromtheEmperorandwhetherithadtobeexecutedornot.Butthiswasonlytheexternalcondition;theessentialsignificanceofthepresenceoftheEmperorandofallthesepeople,fromacourtier’spointofview(andinanEmperor’svicinityallbecamecourtiers),wascleartoeveryone.Itwasthis:theEmperordidnotassumethetitleofcommanderinchief,butdisposedofallthearmies;themenaroundhimwerehisassistants.Arakchéevwasafaithfulcustodiantoenforceorderandactedasthesovereign’sbodyguard.BennigsenwasalandlordintheVílnaprovincewhoappearedtobedoingthehonorsofthedistrict,butwasinrealityagoodgeneral,usefulasanadviserandreadyathandtoreplaceBarclay.TheGrandDukewastherebecauseitsuitedhimtobe.
