           Itwascoldanduncannyintherapidcurrentinthemiddleofthestream,andtheUhlanscaughtholdofoneanotherastheyfellofftheirhorses.Someofthehorsesweredrownedandsomeofthemen;theotherstriedtoswimon,someinthesaddleandsomeclingingtotheirhorses’manes.Theytriedtomaketheirwayforwardtotheoppositebankand,thoughtherewasafordonethirdofamileaway,wereproudthattheywereswimminganddrowninginthisriverundertheeyesofthemanwhosatonthelogandwasnotevenlookingatwhattheyweredoing.Whentheaide-de-camp,havingreturnedandchoosinganopportunemoment,venturedtodrawtheEmperor’sattentiontothedevotionofthePolestohisperson,thelittlemaninthegrayovercoatgotupand,havingsummonedBerthier,beganpacingupanddownthebankwithhim,givinghiminstructionsandoccasionallyglancingdisapprovinglyatthedrowningUhlanswhodistractedhisattention.
