           Nextday,overtakingthearmy,hewentinacarriagetotheNiemen,and,changingintoaPolishuniform,hedrovetotheriverbankinordertoselectaplaceforthecrossing.

           Seeing,ontheotherside,someCossacks(lesCosaques)andthewide-spreadingsteppesinthemidstofwhichlaytheholycityofMoscow(Moscou,lavillesainte),thecapitalofarealmsuchastheScythiaintowhichAlexandertheGreathadmarched—Napoleonunexpectedly,andcontraryaliketostrategicanddiplomaticconsiderations,orderedanadvance,andthenextdayhisarmybegantocrosstheNiemen.
