           Byandby,throughtheglassthestranger’sboatsandmannedmast-headsprovedherawhale-ship.Butasshewassofartowindward,andshootingby,apparentlymakingapassagetosomeotherground,thePequodcouldnothopetoreachher.Sothesignalwassettoseewhatresponsewouldbemade.

           Herebeitsaid,thatlikethevesselsofmilitarymarines,theshipsoftheAmericanWhaleFleethaveeachaprivatesignal;allwhichsignalsbeingcollectedinabookwiththenamesoftherespectivevesselsattached,everycaptainisprovidedwithit.Thereby,thewhalecommandersareenabledtorecogniseeachotherupontheocean,evenatconsiderabledistance,andwithnosmallfacility.

           ThePequod’ssignalwasatlastrespondedtobythestranger’ssettingherown;whichprovedtheshiptobetheJeroboamofNantucket.Squaringheryards,sheboredown,rangedabeamunderthePequod’slee,andloweredaboat;itsoondrewnigh;but,astheside-ladderwasbeingriggedbyStarbuck’sordertoaccommodatethevisitingcaptain,thestrangerinquestionwavedhishandfromhisboat’ssternintokenofthatproceedingbeingentirelyunnecessary.ItturnedoutthattheJeroboamhadamalignantepidemiconboard,andthatMayhew,hercaptain,wasfearfulofinfectingthePequod’scompany.
