           Butthisdidbynomeanspreventallcommunications.Preservinganintervalofsomefewyardsbetweenitselfandtheship,theJeroboam’sboatbytheoccasionaluseofitsoarscontrivedtokeepparalleltothePequod,assheheavilyforgedthroughthesea(forbythistimeitblewveryfresh),withhermain-topsailaback;though,indeed,attimesbythesuddenonsetofalargerollingwave,theboatwouldbepushedsomewayahead;butwouldbesoonskilfullybroughttoherproperbearingsagain.Subjecttothis,andotherthelikeinterruptionsnowandthen,aconversationwassustainedbetweenthetwoparties;butatintervalsnotwithoutstillanotherinterruptionofaverydifferentsort.

           PullinganoarintheJeroboam’sboat,wasamanofasingularappearance,eveninthatwildwhalinglifewhereindividualnotabilitiesmakeupalltotalities.Hewasasmall,short,youngishman,sprinkledalloverhisfacewithfreckles,andwearingredundantyellowhair.Along-skirted,cabalistically-cutcoatofafadedwalnuttingeenvelopedhim;theoverlappingsleevesofwhichwererolleduponhiswrists.Adeep,settled,fanaticdeliriumwasinhiseyes.
