Everyoneknowswhatamultitudeofthings—beds,sauce-pans,knivesandforks,shovelsandtongs,napkins,nut-crackers,andwhatnot,areindispensabletothebusinessofhousekeeping.Justsowithwhaling,whichnecessitatesathree-years’housekeepinguponthewideocean,farfromallgrocers,costermongers,doctors,bakers,andbankers.Andthoughthisalsoholdstrueofmerchantvessels,yetnotbyanymeanstothesameextentaswithwhalemen.Forbesidesthegreatlengthofthewhalingvoyage,thenumerousarticlespeculiartotheprosecutionofthefishery,andtheimpossibilityofreplacingthemattheremoteharborsusuallyfrequented,itmustberemembered,thatofallships,whalingvesselsarethemostexposedtoaccidentsofallkinds,andespeciallytothedestructionandlossoftheverythingsuponwhichthesuccessofthevoyagemostdepends.
