ReckoningthelargestsizedSpermWhale’stailtobeginatthatpointofthetrunkwhereittaperstoaboutthegirthofaman,itcomprisesuponitsuppersurfacealone,anareaofatleastfiftysquarefeet.Thecompactroundbodyofitsrootexpandsintotwobroad,firm,flatpalmsorflukes,graduallyshoalingawaytolessthananinchinthickness.Atthecrotchorjunction,theseflukesslightlyoverlap,thensidewaysrecedefromeachotherlikewings,leavingawidevacancybetween.Innolivingthingarethelinesofbeautymoreexquisitelydefinedthaninthecrescenticbordersoftheseflukes.Atitsutmostexpansioninthefullgrownwhale,thetailwillconsiderablyexceedtwentyfeetacross.
Theentirememberseemsadensewebbedbedofweldedsinews;butcutintoit,andyoufindthatthreedistinctstratacomposeit:—upper,middle,andlower.Thefibresintheupperandlowerlayers,arelongandhorizontal;thoseofthemiddleone,veryshort,andrunningcrosswisebetweentheoutsidelayers.Thistriunestructure,asmuchasanythingelse,impartspowertothetail.TothestudentofoldRomanwalls,themiddlelayerwillfurnishacuriousparalleltothethincourseoftilesalwaysalternatingwiththestoneinthosewonderfulrelicsoftheantique,andwhichundoubtedlycontributesomuchtothegreatstrengthofthemasonry.
