           Forsometimepast,thoughatintervalsonly,theunaccompanied,secludedWhiteWhalehadhauntedthoseuncivilizedseasmostlyfrequentedbytheSpermWhalefishermen.Butnotallofthemknewofhisexistence;afewofthem,comparatively,hadknowinglyseenhim;whilethenumberwhoasyethadactuallyandknowinglygivenbattletohim,wassmallindeed.For,owingtothelargenumberofwhale-cruisers;thedisorderlywaytheyweresprinkledovertheentirewaterycircumference,manyofthemadventurouslypushingtheirquestalongsolitarylatitudes,soasseldomorneverforawholetwelvemonthormoreonastretch,toencounterasinglenews-tellingsailofanysort;theinordinatelengthofeachseparatevoyage;theirregularityofthetimesofsailingfromhome;allthese,withothercircumstances,directandindirect,longobstructedthespreadthroughthewholeworld-widewhaling-fleetofthespecialindividualizingtidingsconcerningMobyDick.
