Inthoroughfaresnighthedocks,anyconsiderableseaportwillfrequentlyoffertoviewthequeerestlookingnondescriptsfromforeignparts.EveninBroadwayandChestnutstreets,Mediterraneanmarinerswillsometimesjostletheaffrightedladies.RegentStreetisnotunknowntoLascarsandMalays;andatBombay,intheApolloGreen,liveYankeeshaveoftenscaredthenatives.ButNewBedfordbeatsallWaterStreetandWapping.Intheselast-mentionedhauntsyouseeonlysailors;inNewBedford,actualcannibalsstandchattingatstreetcorners;savagesoutright;manyofwhomyetcarryontheirbonesunholyflesh.Itmakesastrangerstare.
