AsmostyoungcandidatesforthepainsandpenaltiesofwhalingstopatthissameNewBedford,thencetoembarkontheirvoyage,itmayaswellberelatedthatI,forone,hadnoideaofsodoing. FormymindwasmadeuptosailinnootherthanaNantucketcraft,becausetherewasafine,boisteroussomethingabouteverythingconnectedwiththatfamousoldisland,whichamazinglypleasedme. BesidesthoughNewBedfordhasoflatebeengraduallymonopolizingthebusinessofwhaling,andthoughinthismatterpooroldNantucketisnowmuchbehindher,yetNantucketwashergreatoriginal—theTyreofthisCarthage;—theplacewherethefirstdeadAmericanwhalewasstranded. WhereelsebutfromNantucketdidthoseaboriginalwhalemen,theRed-Men,firstsallyoutincanoestogivechasetotheLeviathan? AndwherebutfromNantucket,too,didthatfirstadventurouslittlesloopputforth,partlyladenwithimportedcobblestones—sogoesthestory—tothrowatthewhales,inordertodiscoverwhentheywerenighenoughtoriskaharpoonfromthebowsprit?
Nowhavinganight,aday,andstillanothernightfollowingbeforemeinNewBedford,erecouldembarkformydestinedport,itbecameamatterofconcernmentwhereIwastoeatandsleepmeanwhile. Itwasaverydubious-looking,nay,averydarkanddismalnight,bitinglycoldandcheerless. Iknewnooneintheplace.
