TheostensiblereasonwhyAhabdidnotgoonboardofthewhalerwehadspokenwasthis:thewindandseabetokenedstorms.Butevenhadthisnotbeenthecase,hewouldnotafterall,perhaps,haveboardedher—judgingbyhissubsequentconductonsimilaroccasions—ifsoithadbeenthat,bytheprocessofhailing,hehadobtainedanegativeanswertothequestionheput.For,asiteventuallyturnedout,hecarednottoconsort,evenforfiveminutes,withanystrangercaptain,excepthecouldcontributesomeofthatinformationhesoabsorbinglysought.Butallthismightremaininadequatelyestimated,werenotsomethingsaidhereofthepeculiarusagesofwhaling-vesselswhenmeetingeachotherinforeignseas,andespeciallyonacommoncruising-ground.
IftwostrangerscrossingthePineBarrensinNewYorkState,ortheequallydesolateSalisburyPlaininEngland;ifcasuallyencounteringeachotherinsuchinhospitablewilds,thesetwain,forthelifeofthem,cannotwellavoidamutualsalutation;andstoppingforamomenttointerchangethenews;and,perhaps,sittingdownforawhileandrestinginconcert:then,howmuchmorenaturalthatupontheillimitablePineBarrensandSalisburyPlainsofthesea,twowhalingvesselsdescryingeachotherattheendsoftheearth—offloneFanning’sIsland,orthefarawayKing’sMills;howmuchmorenatural,Isay,thatundersuchcircumstancestheseshipsshouldnotonlyinterchangehails,butcomeintostillcloser,morefriendlyandsociablecontact.
