           Though,consumedwiththehotfireofhispurpose,AhabinallhisthoughtsandactionseverhadinviewtheultimatecaptureofMobyDick;thoughheseemedreadytosacrificeallmortalintereststothatonepassion;neverthelessitmayhavebeenthathewasbynatureandlonghabituationfartooweddedtoafierywhaleman’sways,altogethertoabandonthecollateralprosecutionofthevoyage.Oratleastifthiswereotherwise,therewerenotwantingothermotivesmuchmoreinfluentialwithhim.Itwouldberefiningtoomuch,perhaps,evenconsideringhismonomania,tohintthathisvindictivenesstowardstheWhiteWhalemighthavepossiblyextendeditselfinsomedegreetoallspermwhales,andthatthemoremonstersheslewbysomuchthemorehemultipliedthechancesthateachsubsequentlyencounteredwhalewouldprovetobethehatedonehehunted.Butifsuchanhypothesisbeindeedexceptionable,therewerestilladditionalconsiderationswhich,thoughnotsostrictlyaccordingwiththewildnessofhisrulingpassion,yetwerebynomeansincapableofswayinghim.

           ToaccomplishhisobjectAhabmustusetools;andofalltoolsusedintheshadowofthemoon,menaremostapttogetoutoforder.Heknew,forexample,thathowevermagnetichisascendencyinsomerespectswasoverStarbuck,yetthatascendencydidnotcoverthecompletespiritualmananymorethanmerecorporealsuperiorityinvolvesintellectualmastership;fortothepurelyspiritual,theintellectualbutstandinsortofcorporealrelation.
