Likeallsea-goingshipcarpenters,andmoreespeciallythosebelongingtowhalingvessels,hewas,toacertainoff-hand,practicalextent,alikeexperiencedinnumeroustradesandcallingscollateraltohisown;thecarpenter’spursuitbeingtheancientandoutbranchingtrunkofallthosenumeroushandicraftswhichmoreorlesshavetodowithwoodasanauxiliarymaterial.But,besidestheapplicationtohimofthegenericremarkabove,thiscarpenterofthePequodwassingularlyefficientinthosethousandnamelessmechanicalemergenciescontinuallyrecurringinalargeship,uponathreeorfouryears’voyage,inuncivilizedandfar-distantseas.Fornottospeakofhisreadinessinordinaryduties:—repairingstoveboats,sprungspars,reformingtheshapeofclumsy-bladedoars,insertingbull’seyesinthedeck,ornewtree-nailsinthesideplanks,andothermiscellaneousmattersmoredirectlypertainingtohisspecialbusiness;hewasmoreoverunhesitatinglyexpertinallmannerofconflictingaptitudes,bothusefulandcapricious.
