InthePropontis,asfarasIcanlearn,noneofthatpeculiarsubstancecalledbritistobefound,thealimentoftherightwhale.ButIhaveeveryreasontobelievethatthefoodofthespermwhale—squidorcuttle-fish-lurksatthebottomofthatsea,becauselargecreatures,butbynomeansthelargestofthatsort,havebeenfoundatitssurface.If,then,youproperlyputthesestatementstogether,andreasonuponthemabit,youwillclearlyperceivethat,accordingtoallhumanreasoning,Procopius’ssea-monster,thatforhalfacenturystovetheshipsofaRomanEmperor,mustinallprobabilityhavebeenaspermwhale.
