LikeCaptainPeleg,CaptainBildadwasawell-to-do,retiredwhaleman.ButunlikeCaptainPeleg—whocarednotarushforwhatarecalledseriousthings,andindeeddeemedthoseself-sameseriousthingstheveriestofalltrifles—CaptainBildadhadnotonlybeenoriginallyeducatedaccordingtothestrictestsectofNantucketQuakerism,butallhissubsequentoceanlife,andthesightofmanyunclad,lovelyislandcreatures,roundtheHorn—allthathadnotmovedthisnativebornQuakeronesinglejot,hadnotsomuchasalteredoneangleofhisvest.
