Ripplinglywithdrawingfromhisprey,MobyDicknowlayatalittledistance,verticallythrustinghisoblongwhiteheadupanddowninthebillows;andatthesametimeslowlyrevolvinghiswholespindledbody;sothatwhenhisvastwrinkledforeheadrose—sometwentyormorefeetoutofthewater—thenowrisingswells,withalltheirconfluentwaves,dazzlinglybrokeagainstit;vindictivelytossingtheirshiveredspraystillhigherintotheair.So,inagale,thebuthalfbaffledChannelbillowsonlyrecoilfromthebaseoftheEddystone,triumphantlytooverleapitssummitwiththeirscud.
