The Life-Buoy

           Thelife-buoyalongslendercaskwasdroppedfromthestern,whereitalwayshungobedienttoacunningspring;butnohandrosetoseizeit,andthesunhavinglongbeatuponthiscaskithadshrunken,sothatitslowlyfilled,andthatparchedwoodalsofilledatitseverypore;andthestuddediron-boundcaskfollowedthesailortothebottom,asiftoyieldhimhispillow,thoughinsoothbutahardone.

           AndthusthefirstmanofthePequodthatmountedthemasttolookoutfortheWhiteWhale,ontheWhiteWhale’sownpeculiarground;thatmanwasswallowedupinthedeep.Butfew,perhaps,thoughtofthatatthetime.Indeed,insomesort,theywerenotgrievedatthisevent,atleastasaportent;fortheyregardedit,notasafore-shadowingofevilinthefuture,butasthefulfilmentofanevilalreadypresaged.Theydeclaredthatnowtheyknewthereasonofthosewildshriekstheyhadheardthenightbefore.ButagaintheoldManxmansaidnay.

           Thelostlife-buoywasnowtobereplaced;Starbuckwasdirectedtoseetoit;butasnocaskofsufficientlightnesscouldbefound,andasinthefeverisheagernessofwhatseemedtheapproachingcrisisofthevoyage,allhandswereimpatientofanytoilbutwhatwasdirectlyconnectedwithitsfinalend,whateverthatmightprovetobe;therefore,theyweregoingtoleavetheship’ssternunprovidedwithabuoy,whenbycertainstrangesignsandinuendoesQueequeghintedahintconcerninghiscoffin.
