Butwillanywhalemanbelievethesestories?No.Thewhaleofto-dayisasbigashisancestorsinPliny’stime.AndifeverIgowherePlinyis,I,awhaleman(morethanhewas),willmakeboldtotellhimso.BecauseIcannotunderstandhowitis,thatwhiletheEgyptianmummiesthatwereburiedthousandsofyearsbeforeevenPlinywasborn,donotmeasuresomuchintheircoffinsasamodernKentuckianinhissocks;andwhilethecattleandotheranimalssculpturedontheoldestEgyptianandNinevehtablets,bytherelativeproportionsinwhichtheyaredrawn,justasplainlyprovethatthehigh-bred,stall-fed,prizecattleofSmithfield,notonlyequal,butfarexceedinmagnitudethefattestofPharaoh’sfatkine;inthefaceofallthis,Iwillnotadmitthatofallanimalsthewhalealoneshouldhavedegenerated.
