WhilstIwasthuscloselyscanninghim,half-pretendingmeanwhiletobelookingoutatthestormfromthecasement,heneverheededmypresence,nevertroubledhimselfwithsomuchasasingleglance;butappearedwhollyoccupiedwithcountingthepagesofthemarvellousbook.Consideringhowsociablywehadbeensleepingtogetherthenightprevious,andespeciallyconsideringtheaffectionatearmIhadfoundthrownovermeuponwakinginthemorning,Ithoughtthisindifferenceofhisverystrange.Butsavagesarestrangebeings;attimesyoudonotknowexactlyhowtotakethem.Atfirsttheyareoverawing;theircalmself-collectednessofsimplicityseemsasSocraticwisdom.IhadnoticedalsothatQueequegneverconsortedatall,orbutverylittle,withtheotherseamenintheinn.Hemadenoadvanceswhatever;appearedtohavenodesiretoenlargethecircleofhisacquaintances.Allthisstruckmeasmightysingular;yet,uponsecondthoughts,therewassomethingalmostsublimeinit.Herewasamansometwentythousandmilesfromhome,bythewayofCapeHorn,thatis—whichwastheonlywayhecouldgetthere—thrownamongpeopleasstrangetohimasthoughhewereintheplanetJupiter;andyetheseemedentirelyathisease;preservingtheutmostserenity;contentwithhisowncompanionship;alwaysequaltohimself.Surelythiswasatouchoffinephilosophy;thoughnodoubthehadneverheardtherewassuchathingasthat.But,perhaps,tobetruephilosophers,wemortalsshouldnotbeconsciousofsolivingorsostriving.
