           Now,thegamehavingrisentoleeward,heandtheotherthreeGermanboatsthatsoonfollowedhim,hadconsiderablythestartofthePequod’skeels.Therewereeightwhales,anaveragepod.Awareoftheirdanger,theyweregoingallabreastwithgreatspeedstraightbeforethewind,rubbingtheirflanksascloselyassomanyspansofhorsesinharness.Theyleftagreat,widewake,asthoughcontinuallyunrollingagreatwideparchmentuponthesea.
