Butiffromthecomparativedimensionsofthewhale’sproperbrain,youdeemitincapableofbeingadequatelycharted,thenIhaveanotherideaforyou.Ifyouattentivelyregardalmostanyquadruped’sspine,youwillbestruckwiththeresemblanceofitsvertebraetoastrungnecklaceofdwarfedskulls,allbearingrudimentalresemblancetotheskullproper.ItisaGermanconceit,thatthevertebraeareabsolutelyundevelopedskulls.Butthecuriousexternalresemblance,ItakeittheGermanswerenotthefirstmentoperceive.Aforeignfriendoncepointeditouttome,intheskeletonofafoehehadslain,andwiththevertebraeofwhichhewasinlaying,inasortofbasso-relieve,thebeakedprowofhiscanoe.
