           Atthisinstant,whileDaggoo,onthesummitofthehead,wasclearingthewhipwhichhadsomehowgotfoulofthegreatcuttingtacklesasharpcrackingnoisewasheard;andtotheunspeakablehorrorofall,oneofthetwoenormoushookssuspendingtheheadtoreout,andwithavastvibrationtheenormousmasssidewaysswung,tillthedrunkshipreeledandshookasifsmittenbyaniceberg.Theoneremaininghook,uponwhichtheentirestrainnowdepended,seemedeveryinstanttobeonthepointofgivingway;aneventstillmorelikelyfromtheviolentmotionsofthehead.

           "Comedown,comedown!"yelledtheseamentoDaggoo,butwithonehandholdingontotheheavytackles,sothatiftheheadshoulddrop,hewouldstillremainsuspended;thenegrohavingclearedthefoulline,rammeddownthebucketintothenowcollapsedwell,meaningthattheburiedharpooneershouldgraspit,andsobehoistedout.
