Butnowforgetallaboutblindsandwhiskersforamoment,and,standingintheRightWhale’smouth,lookaroundyouafresh.Seeingallthesecolonnadesofbonesomethodicallyrangedabout,wouldyounotthinkyouwereinsideofthegreatHaarlemorgan,andgazinguponitsthousandpipes?ForacarpettotheorganwehavearugofthesoftestTurkey—thetongue,whichisglued,asitwere,tothefloorofthemouth.Itisveryfatandtender,andapttotearinpiecesinhoistingitondeck.Thisparticulartonguenowbeforeus;atapassingglanceIshouldsayitwasasix-barreler;thatis,itwillyieldyouaboutthatamountofoil.
Erethis,youmusthaveplainlyseenthetruthofwhatIstartedwith—thattheSpermWhaleandtheRightWhalehavealmostentirelydifferentheads.Tosumup,then:intheRightWhale’sthereisnogreatwellofsperm;noivoryteethatall;nolong,slendermandibleofalowerjaw,liketheSpermWhale’s.NorintheSpermWhalearethereanyofthoseblindsofbone;nohugelowerlip;andscarcelyanythingofatongue.Again,theRightWhalehastwoexternalspout-holes,theSpermWhaleonlyone.
