Buttheplacingofthecap-sheaftoallthisblunderingbusinesswasreservedforthescientificFrederickCuvier,brothertothefamousBaron.In1836,hepublishedaNaturalHistoryofWhales,inwhichhegiveswhathecallsapictureoftheSpermWhale.BeforeshowingthatpicturetoanyNantucketer,youhadbestprovideforyoursummaryretreatfromNantucket.Inaword,FrederickCuvier’sSpermWhaleisnotaSpermWhale,butasquash.Ofcourse,heneverhadthebenefitofawhalingvoyage(suchmenseldomhave),butwhencehederivedthatpicture,whocantell?Perhapshegotitashisscientificpredecessorinthesamefield,Desmarest,gotoneofhisauthenticabortions;thatis,fromaChinesedrawing.AndwhatsortoflivelyladswiththepencilthoseChineseare,manyqueercupsandsaucersinformus.
