The First Lowering

           Thenallinoneweldedcommotioncameaninvisiblepushfromastern,whileforwardtheboatseemedstrikingonaledge;thesailcollapsedandexploded;agushofscaldingvaporshotupnearby;somethingrolledandtumbledlikeanearthquakebeneathus.Thewholecrewwerehalfsuffocatedastheyweretossedhelter-skelterintothewhitecurdlingcreamofthesquall.Squall,whale,andharpoonhadallblendedtogether;andthewhale,merelygrazedbytheiron,escaped.

           Thoughcompletelyswamped,theboatwasnearlyunharmed.Swimmingrounditwepickedupthefloatingoars,andlashingthemacrossthegunwale,tumbledbacktoourplaces.Therewesatuptoourkneesinthesea,thewatercoveringeveryribandplank,sothattoourdownwardgazingeyesthesuspendedcraftseemedacoralboatgrownuptousfromthebottomoftheocean.

           Thewindincreasedtoahowl;thewavesdashedtheirbucklerstogether;thewholesquallroared,forked,andcrackledarounduslikeawhitefireupontheprairie,inwhichunconsumed,wewereburning;immortalinthesejawsofdeath!Invainwehailedtheotherboats;aswellroartothelivecoalsdownthechimneyofaflamingfurnaceashailthoseboatsinthatstorm.Meanwhilethedrivingscud,rack,andmist,grewdarkerwiththeshadowsofnight;nosignoftheshipcouldbeseen.Therisingseaforbadeallattemptstobaleouttheboat.Theoarswereuselessaspropellers,performingnowtheofficeoflife-preservers.
