Though,inthesecases,thedirectiontakenbyanyonewhalebestraightasasurveyor’sparallel,andthoughthelineofadvancebestrictlyconfinedtoitsownunavoidable,straightwake,yetthearbitraryveininwhichatthesetimesheissaidtoswim,generallyembracessomefewmilesinwidth(moreorless,astheveinispresumedtoexpandorcontract);butneverexceedsthevisualsweepfromthewhale-ship’smast-heads,whencircumspectlyglidingalongthismagiczone.Thesumis,thatatparticularseasonswithinthatbreadthandalongthatpath,migratingwhalesmaywithgreatconfidencebelookedfor.
Andhencenotonlyatsubstantiatedtimes,uponwellknownseparatefeeding-grounds,couldAhabhopetoencounterhisprey;butincrossingthewidestexpansesofwaterbetweenthosegroundshecould,byhisart,soplaceandtimehimselfonhisway,aseventhennottobewhollywithoutprospectofameeting.
Therewasacircumstancewhichatfirstsightseemedtoentanglehisdeliriousbutstillmethodicalscheme.Butnotsointhereality,perhaps.Thoughthegregariousspermwhaleshavetheirregularseasonsforparticulargrounds,yetingeneralyoucannotconcludethattheherdswhichhauntedsuchandsuchalatitudeorlongitudethisyear,say,willturnouttobeidenticallythesamewiththosethatwerefoundtheretheprecedingseason;thoughtherearepeculiarandunquestionableinstanceswherethecontraryofthishasprovedtrue.
