           Starbuckwasnocrusaderafterperils;inhimcouragewasnotasentiment;butathingsimplyusefultohim,andalwaysathanduponallmortallypracticaloccasions.Besides,hethought,perhaps,thatinthisbusinessofwhaling,couragewasoneofthegreatstapleoutfitsoftheship,likeherbeefandherbread,andnottobefoolishlywasted.Whereforehehadnofancyforloweringforwhalesaftersun-down;norforpersistinginfightingafishthattoomuchpersistedinfightinghim.For,thoughtStarbuck,Iamhereinthiscriticaloceantokillwhalesformyliving,andnottobekilledbythemfortheirs;andthathundredsofmenhadbeensokilledStarbuckwellknew.Whatdoomwashisownfather’s?Where,inthebottomlessdeeps,couldhefindthetornlimbsofhisbrother?

           Withmemoriesliketheseinhim,and,moreover,giventoacertainsuperstitiousness,ashasbeensaid;thecourageofthisStarbuck,whichcould,nevertheless,stillflourish,mustindeedhavebeenextreme.
