           AlexeyAlexandrovitch,oncomingbackfromchurchservice,hadspentthewholemorningindoors.Hehadtwopiecesofbusinessbeforehimthatmorning;first,toreceiveandsendonadeputationfromthenativetribeswhichwasonitswaytoPetersburg,andnowatMoscow;secondly,towritethepromisedlettertothelawyer.Thedeputation,thoughithadbeensummonedatAlexeyAlexandrovitch’sinstigation,wasnotwithoutitsdiscomfortingandevendangerousaspect,andhewasgladhehadfounditinMoscow.Themembersofthisdeputationhadnottheslightestconceptionoftheirdutyandtheparttheyweretoplay.Theynaïvelybelievedthatitwastheirbusinesstolaybeforethecommissiontheirneedsandtheactualconditionofthings,andtoaskassistanceofthegovernment,andutterlyfailedtograspthatsomeoftheirstatementsandrequestssupportedthecontentionoftheenemy’sside,andsospoiledthewholebusiness.AlexeyAlexandrovitchwasbusilyengagedwiththemforalongwhile,drewupaprogramforthemfromwhichtheywerenottodepart,andondismissingthemwrotealettertoPetersburgfortheguidanceofthedeputation.HehadhischiefsupportinthisaffairintheCountessLidiaIvanovna.Shewasaspecialistinthematterofdeputations,andnooneknewbetterthanshehowtomanagethem,andputtheminthewaytheyshouldgo.Havingcompletedthistask,AlexeyAlexandrovitchwrotethelettertothelawyer.Withouttheslightesthesitationhegavehimpermissiontoactashemightjudgebest.
