           Thedoctorwasnotyetup,andthefootmansaidthat“hehadbeenuplate,andhadgivenordersnottobewaked,butwouldgetupsoon.”Thefootmanwascleaningthelamp-chimneys,andseemedverybusyaboutthem.Thisconcentrationofthefootmanuponhislamps,andhisindifferencetowhatwaspassinginLevin,atfirstastoundedhim,butimmediatelyonconsideringthequestionherealizedthatnoonekneworwasboundtoknowhisfeelings,andthatitwasallthemorenecessarytoactcalmly,sensibly,andresolutelytogetthroughthiswallofindifferenceandattainhisaim.

           Atthechemist’sthelankshopmansealedupapacketofpowdersforacoachmanwhostoodwaiting,andrefusedhimopiumwiththesamecallousnesswithwhichthedoctor’sfootmanhadcleanedhislampchimneys.Tryingnottogetflurriedoroutoftemper,Levinmentionedthenamesofthedoctorandmidwife,andexplainingwhattheopiumwasneededfor,triedtopersuadehim.
