           Alltheroomsofthesummervillawerefullofporters,gardeners,andfootmengoingtoandfrocarryingoutthings.Cupboardsandchestswereopen;twicetheyhadsenttotheshopforcord;piecesofnewspaperweretossingaboutonthefloor.Twotrunks,somebagsandstrapped-uprugs,hadbeencarrieddownintothehall.Thecarriageandtwohiredcabswerewaitingatthesteps.Anna,forgettingherinwardagitationintheworkofpacking,wasstandingatatableinherboudoir,packinghertravelingbag,whenAnnushkacalledherattentiontotherattleofsomecarriagedrivingup.AnnalookedoutofthewindowandsawAlexeyAlexandrovitch’scourieronthesteps,ringingatthefrontdoorbell.

           “Runandfindoutwhatitis,”shesaid,andwithacalmsenseofbeingpreparedforanything,shesatdowninalowchair,foldingherhandsonherknees.AfootmanbroughtinathickpacketdirectedinAlexeyAlexandrovitch’shand.
