           WhenAnnawentintotheroom,Dollywassittinginthelittledrawing-roomwithawhite-headedfatlittleboy,alreadylikehisfather,givinghimalessoninFrenchreading.Astheboyread,hekepttwistingandtryingtotearoffabuttonthatwasnearlyoffhisjacket.Hismotherhadseveraltimestakenhishandfromit,butthefatlittlehandwentbacktothebuttonagain.Hismotherpulledthebuttonoffandputitinherpocket.

           “Keepyourhandsstill,Grisha,”shesaid,andshetookupherwork,acoverletshehadlongbeenmaking.Shealwayssettoworkonitatdepressedmoments,andnowsheknittedatitnervously,twitchingherfingersandcountingthestitches.Thoughshehadsentwordthedaybeforetoherhusbandthatitwasnothingtoherwhetherhissistercameornot,shehadmadeeverythingreadyforherarrival,andwasexpectinghersister-in-lawwithemotion.
