Chapter 10

           

           WhenLevinthoughtwhathewasandwhathewaslivingfor,hecouldfindnoanswertothequestionsandwasreducedtodespair,butheleftoffquestioninghimselfaboutit.Itseemedasthoughheknewbothwhathewasandforwhathewasliving,forheactedandlivedresolutelyandwithouthesitation.Indeed,intheselatterdayshewasfarmoredecidedandunhesitatinginlifethanhehadeverbeen.

           WhenhewentbacktothecountryatthebeginningofJune,hewentbackalsotohisusualpursuits.Themanagementoftheestate,hisrelationswiththepeasantsandtheneighbors,thecareofhishousehold,themanagementofhissister’sandbrother’sproperty,ofwhichhehadthedirection,hisrelationswithhiswifeandkindred,thecareofhischild,andthenewbee-keepinghobbyhehadtakenupthatspring,filledallhistime.

           Thesethingsoccupiedhimnow,notbecausehejustifiedthemtohimselfbyanysortofgeneralprinciples,ashehaddoneinformerdays;onthecontrary,disappointedbythefailureofhisformereffortsforthegeneralwelfare,andtoomuchoccupiedwithhisownthoughtandthemassofbusinesswithwhichhewasburdenedfromallsides,hehadcompletelygivenupthinkingofthegeneralgood,andhebusiedhimselfwithallthisworksimplybecauseitseemedtohimthathemustdowhathewasdoingthathecouldnotdootherwise.
